To help build health literacy, we have compiled accepted scientific definitions for key terms used in systemic wellness and longevity science.
Microbiome (Mikrobiyom)
The entire habitat, including the microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, viruses), their genomes, their active compounds, and the surrounding environmental conditions in a specific physical niche.
Microbiota (Mikrobiyota)
The actual collection of living microorganisms occupying a defined biological environment, such as the intestinal microbiota.
Probiotic (Probiyotik)
Live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host. Must be strain-specific and backed by human trials.
Prebiotic (Prebiyotik)
A selectively utilized substrate by host microorganisms that confers a health benefit. Feeds commensal beneficial species in the gut.
Postbiotic (Postbiyotik)
A preparation of inanimate (live-inactivated) microorganisms and/or their structural components that confers a health benefit on the host.
Synbiotic (Sinbiyotik)
A combination of probiotics and prebiotics designed to act synergistically to support beneficial gut populations.
SCFA (Kısa Zincirli Yağ Asitleri)
Short-Chain Fatty Acids produced by bacterial fermentation of dietary fibers in the colon. The major ones are acetate, propionate, and butyrate.
Butyrate (Bütirat)
A critical short-chain fatty acid that serves as the primary energy source for colon epithelial cells and assists in supporting gut barrier integrity.
Polyphenol (Polifenol)
Natural plant compounds rich in phenolic structures, known for supporting vascular health and acting as selective substrates for gut microbiota.
Gut-Brain Axis (Bağırsak-Beyin Aksı)
The bidirectional biochemical communication highway between the gastrointestinal tract and the central nervous system, utilizing neural, endocrine, and immune pathways.
Vagus Nerve (Vagus Siniri)
The tenth cranial nerve that serves as the primary physical conduit for gut-to-brain bidirectional signaling, carrying visceral sensory information to the brainstem.
Nitric Oxide (Nitrik Oksit)
A gaseous signaling molecule produced by the vascular endothelium and from dietary nitrates, responsible for Vasodilation and blood flow regulation.
Endothelium (Endotel)
The single layer of flat epithelial cells lining the interior surface of blood vessels, responsible for producing eNOS and regulating vascular tone.
Flow State (Akış Durumu)
A cognitive state of deep, effortless attention and peak performance, supported by steady cerebral oxygen delivery and balanced autonomic tone.
