Microbiomes of the Body: Beyond the Gut

The human microbiome is not a single entity. It is a collection of distinct ecosystems occupying different habitats across our entire physiology.

Microbiomes of the Body: Beyond the Gut

When people hear the word "microbiome," they immediately think of the gut. However, the human body is actually home to several distinct microbial ecosystems, each occupying a different biological niche. Just as the Earth has different biomes like rainforests, deserts, and oceans, our bodies host unique microbial environments designed for specific physiological barriers.

1. The Body as a Multi-Biome Planet

Every habitat of the body has its own physical conditions—pH, moisture levels, lipid density, and oxygen exposure. Consequently, the microbial communities in these locations differ radically. A bacterium that thrives in the acidic, low-oxygen vaginal environment would struggle to survive on the dry, lipid-rich surface of the forearm. Understanding systemic health requires mapping these distinct outposts.

2. The Oral Microbiome: The Gatekeeper

The mouth contains the second most diverse microbiota in the body, with over 700 species of bacteria colonizing the teeth, tongue, and mucosal surfaces. It acts as the gateway to both the digestive and respiratory systems. Crucially, specific oral bacteria (like Veillonella and Streptococcus) are responsible for converting dietary nitrates from green vegetables into nitrites, which are precursors to **nitric oxide**, a vital signaling molecule for circulation.

3. The Skin Microbiome: The Outer Guard

Our skin is covered in billions of microbes that live in the stratum corneum and sebaceous glands. The dominant species (like Staphylococcus epidermidis) break down sebum lipids into free fatty acids, maintaining an acidic pH (4.5–5.5) known as the "acid mantle." This biological acidity shields the body from colonization by transient pathogens and regulates local immune cell activity.

4. The Vaginal Microbiome: Selective Simplicity

Unlike the gut, where high diversity is a marker of health, a healthy vaginal microbiome is defined by selective dominance and low diversity. It is dominated by a few key species of the genus Lactobacillus. These bacteria secrete lactic acid and hydrogen peroxide, keeping the local pH low (3.5–4.5) to protect the reproductive tract and provide the initial immunological inoculation for newborn infants during birth.

5. The Respiratory and Nasal Microbiome

The nasal cavity and upper respiratory tract host specialized commensal communities adapted to constant airflow and mucus production. They interact with our local immune tissues (like tonsils), helping defend the airways against viral invaders and maintaining mucosal moisture balances.

6. NATUVISIO Approach: Mapping the Whole

We do not treat the gut in isolation. We recognize that the body's multiple microbiomes communicate with one another. A change in oral diversity affects gut signaling, and gut barrier inflammation can manifest as skin reactivity. Our protocols are designed to support systemic barriers, respecting the unique ecological needs of every physiological outpost.
