Splanchnic Blood Flow & Exercise Ischemia: Cardiovascular Perfusion Redistribution

The biophysics of circulatory shunting: How physical exertion shunts 80% of splanchnic blood to skeletal muscles and why nitric oxide buffers gut ischemia.

1. Splanchnic Circulatory Shunting During Exertion

During strenuous physical exercise, intense sympathetic activation induces systemic vasoconstriction in the splanchnic (gastrointestinal) vascular bed. Up to 80% of abdominal blood volume is shunted away from the gut to supply working skeletal muscles and myocardium.

2. Intestinal Mucosal Ischemia and Nitric Oxide Buffering

Splanchnic hypoperfusion leads to mucosal hypoxia and enterocyte damage. Bioavailable nitric oxide relaxes intestinal micro-arterioles, maintaining critical basal mucosal blood flow to prevent exercise-induced intestinal permeability.
